West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will hold a meeting of her party MPs and MLAs besides central and state ministers on Monday evening where she is expected to explain the party’s stand on the Presidential election.
Ms. Banerjee, who is strongly pitching for the candidature of former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, is likely to explain the party’s stand on the Presidential poll at the crucial meeting, party sources said.
When asked whether the party would abstain from voting in the Presidential poll, Trinamool Congress all India general secretary and Railway Minister Mukul Roy told PTI, “The question does not arise. She has not yet taken any decision on this.”
Asked if Trinamool MPs and MLAs were upset with her stand on the issue, Mr. Roy said it was “bogus” and maintained there was no division in the party. “As a whole the party is solidly behind her on this matter”, he said, adding Mr. Kalam was the best Presidential candidate.

Mr.Narayana Murthy of Infosys will be a more suitable candidate than
Mr.Kalam. Why are the people so obsessed with Mr.Kalam. There are others
who are comparable to his achievements and capabilities. When are we
going to recognize their prized qualities.?
Various names are floated by different political parties and their leaders for the post of the President of India. It goes without saying that every suggestion has its own interests and vested interests behind it. Can someone explain as to whose pleasure is being aimed? How the will of the common citizen is taken care of? What difference it will make to the poor if one man or another man is occupying the Rashtrapathi’ palace? One hopefully recollect Gandhi’s words that he could not be party to any action which would not take into consideration the poorest of the poor of this country.
President has nothing to be being a nice person.. he needs to be have strong constitutional acumen and knowledge and political skills.. Kalam last time was just seen with school kids most of the time.. A president need not be popular with people (whereas the PM has to be) bcs the profile of a president is different.. kalam is of course nice, but does not fit into the make-up of a president of India.
