Following the killing of suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Mohammed Qateel Siddiqui in Pune's Yerawada jail, Neelam Gorhe, Shiv Sena leader from Pune, has raised concern over lax security arrangements in prison.
“In Nashik, there are reports of prisoners not having returned after being released on parole. Saturday's incident of murder has put a question mark on the security arrangements in the Pune prison. Previously, there have been many cases of prisoners running away from jails. Although, higher officials are sometimes responsible, it's always the lower officials who are held responsible,” Ms. Gorhe said.
She said there were complaints of ill-treatment and irregularities in appointments from jail staff against Prakash Pawar, Additional Director General of Prisons.
“A committee was appointed to probe the complaints against Mr. Pawar. Where is the committee report? Even as a report is awaited, Mr. Pawar is again assigned the responsibility.”
Ms. Gorhe said Siddiqui's murder was the first such incident in Yerawada in 161 years.
