Congress members must shed factional behaviour, party president Sonia Gandhi said on Wednesday, stressing that fighting as one disciplined team was critical to electoral victories. Addressing the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) for the first time after the party's poor performance in the recent Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa, Ms. Gandhi underscored the fact that the Congress needed to draw upon the lessons of previous polls and shape up for the series of impending State elections.
“…we must all shed all manner of factional behaviour, and fight as one disciplined team at all levels. That will be the single-most important factor to decide whether we win or lose,” she said, pointing out, “People look to us — but we need to show them our commitment and our unity if we are to convert this sentiment into electoral victories.”
But even as she urged party colleagues to demonstrate their commitment, unity and observe discipline, she came to son and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's rescue, while discussing the recent Uttar Pradesh elections, where the Congress stood fourth, adding just six seats to its 2007 score.
While describing the results in Punjab and Goa as “very disappointing,” Ms. Gandhi said, “In Uttar Pradesh, even though we did not perform as well as we had hoped to, we increased our vote share quite considerably and were seen as a serious player for the first time in 22 years.”
Wednesday's CPP meeting comes in the wake of a high-power committee, set up under Union Defence Minister A.K. Antony to review the party's performance in five recent Assembly elections, submitting its report to Ms. Gandhi.
With Assembly elections due later this year in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, and in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan next year, the Congress president asked party members to take the message of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's social welfare schemes to the people. Without naming the Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled States of Gujarat and Karnataka, she asked her party colleagues to “expose” the hollow claims of Opposition-ruled State governments, stressing that “mis-governance and corruption have been widespread in some of these States” as revealed in reports of the Comptroller and Auditor General and the Lokayuktas.
‘Duty to the people'
Simultaneously, she highlighted the urgent need to pass pending legislation on food security and land acquisition, which have been held up largely because UPA allies, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Trinamool Congress, are not happy with the way they have been framed. “…we must do all we can to ensure that the legislative process is not unduly delayed,” Ms. Gandhi said, adding, “whatever motives may guide the Opposition, we have but one singular duty and that is to the people who have elected us.”
Backs NCTC
While stressing her party's commitment to strengthening federalism, she indirectly backed the government's proposal for a National Counter-Terrorism Centre, which has come under fire from Opposition and allies alike: “…there are Centre-State issues of major national importance such as fighting terrorism or dealing with Left-wing extremism, where the Centre cannot shirk its responsibility,” she said, underscoring, “In such cases, it has been our government's endeavour to work closely with the State governments so that our national interest is protected. Trust and cooperation must be the anchor of Centre-State relations.”

The fact is that power is slipping from Sonia Gandhi, her family and the chosen few servile Congress leaders. The media, especially their loud supporters in the electronic media, cannot help them retain power any longer. Alas, the good days are over for them. Mercifully therfore this political development may benefit the people of this country.
i am sure congress will survive the black days and come back
soon......pls kick out corrupts and looters out of party and govt
It is amazing that Ms. Gandhi talking of range of issues which most people, even dumb witted, are quite aware. There is no logic in wasting time talking of peripheral things neatly skirting the core issue of all; thriving endemic corruption. Still Ms. Gandhi does not find time to talk of the need to have a strong independent ombudsman, obviously the ruling party has too many skeletons in the cupboard and an independent anti-corruption body is very inconvenient indeed.
The Congress Party failed to deliver the nation, which was expected by the common man, when they have given the party to rule the Country twice from 2004.And the main reason for the pathetic performance of the recent state election results for the Congress party is due to its involvements in the series of corruption scandals.
A sincere appeal to Smt. Sonia Gandhi, a fine human being!. Congress is dying because it has become dynastic. You infused new life into it., when you stepped aside and let Dr. MMS be the PM. You can revive Congress by turning it from Congress(I) into Indian National Congress... that it was.. pre-1969. You, Rahul and Priyanka... must step aside. Bring someone from outside Nehru-Gandhi family. Someone who believes in the Idea of India ! The more Congress insists on dynasty... the more it strengthens BJP/RSS. To take the sting off BJP/RSS., turn Congress into a democratic party... a party that believes in the IDEA OF INDIA. Pitch the positive THE IDEA OF INDIA versus RSS/BJP's/Savarkar-ian hateful and negative 'Hindutva'... and let the Indian voter decide. I have faith in the Indian Voter. We have to save eclectic Hinduism from Hindutva. That is the civilizational challenge... and more important than winning the next elections.
It is easiest to give asvice but to act on advice is the duty of the people you are
advising. I do not know about UP who were the corrupt there for two decades but
INC lost resoundingly. I know something about Panjab, no body can beat Badals in
corruption but it was the disunion of some regional chieftans likeMP from Jallundhur
Gurdaspur and defeated from Ferozpur who have done every trick to defeat INC
candidates. Equally center at fault in delaying announcing candidates and allowing
relatives of leaders to the field; they all lost. And Badal's corrupt won, two of his
cabinet members are in jail.
Sonia Gandhi refuses to acknowledge the real reasons for Congress debacle. They are corruption, misrule and arrogance. She can accuse the State Govts of being corrupt and mismanaged but no sensible person will believe her. Most well run State Govts like Gujarat,Bihar and Orissa are being re-elected and Congress is not making any dent in those States. Criticizing such States of mismanagement and corruption makes her views hollow!
These claims of development are false by the Congress Chief, considering the tax and other revenues from the mineral wealth to the Ex chequer, amount spent on development is negligible. Telanaga Issue will surely cost them in AP. Its shameful that our so called leaders are so much concerned about their parties and not the nation a citizens. Being a citizen I want to know what is the improvement in literacy after imposing of education cess. Our leader themselves are promoting regional, religious and caste based politics.
UPA2 is doomed if they don't punish the guilty, and pass Jan Lokpal bill before the next elections. You can wake up a sleeping man,you cant wake up someone pretending to sleep! Stop CBI shielding criminals supporting UPA2,prosecuting may help!
Dear Ms. Gandhi, please understand that your party got the election drubbing certainly not because of the party organizational issues etc but only because people are sick at their bottom of the heart of the looting of the public wealth while your Government was looking conveniently away. People will not consider a party merely because of its organization strength or the lack of it, but they will surely look for sincerity of its leaders tackling corruption. Venerable Congress is reduced to a pitiable state of having to clutch to the electoral victory of Manipur for consolation. A bigger drub is awaiting the party from disgusted public and Congress will pay dear prize for not making serious attempt to install independent ombudsman.
