Today, we have made history. We're a major missile power: V.K. Saraswat
India on Thursday propelled itself into an elite club of nations with Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) technology by successfully test-firing nuclear-capable Agni-V, which covered a range of more than 5,000 km.
The significance of the success lies in the fact that Agni-V is the most formidable missile in India's arsenal, with the longest range. With this grand success, India joins the U.S., Russia, France and China, which have ICBM capability. With India's policy of no-first-use of nuclear weapons, Agni-V will provide the country with depth in deterrence.
India’s key to elite nuclear club (PDF)
In a flawless mission, Agni-V, painted in white and black with an orange ribbon across, lifted off majestically from a rail mobile launcher at 8.04 a.m. from the Wheeler Island, off the Odisha coast. After a 20-minute flight, the missile's nose-cone carrying a dummy payload impacted near the pre-designated target area with an accuracy of few metres between Australia and Madagascar in the Indian Ocean.
After the lift-off, it cut a ballistic path across the sky reaching a height of 600 km, before rapidly descending. The mission was so smooth that the missile's three stages ignited on time and decoupled with clockwork precision before the re-entry vehicle was injected into the atmosphere at an altitude of 100 km with a velocity of 6,000 metres per second. The re-entry vehicle withstood scorching temperatures of about 3,000 degree Celsius as it sliced into the atmosphere at a remarkably accurate angle.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has designed and developed Agni-V. Although DRDO officials claim that Agni-V “is not any country-specific,” the fact remains that the missile can reach most parts of China. The three-stage, 17-metre tall Agni-V, weighing 50 tonnes, is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead of 1.1 tonnes.
During the final, pre-launch moments, there was an air of anxiety and expectation in the Mission Control Room as V.K. Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, and other missile technologists sat in front of computer consoles.
Moments after the mission's success, Dr. Saraswat told The Hindu: “Today, we have made history. We are a major missile power.” India was among the select group of countries to have the capability to design, develop, build and manufacture a long-range missile of this class and technological complexity. “The versatile capability of this missile will enable India to leapfrog into areas of Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs), anti-satellite weapons and the capability to launch satellites on demand. This will usher in a new era of missile development in India,” he asserted.
“Fantastic mission”
Avinash Chander, Chief Controller (Missiles and Strategic Systems), DRDO, and Programme Director, Agni-V, called it a “fantastic mission, which has achieved a range of more than 5,000 km.” The success gave India the confidence to go ahead with a larger number of missiles and longer ranges, he added.
V.G. Sekaran, Director, Advanced Systems Laboratory, Hyderabad, described the success as “overwhelming.”

Congratulations to India and its Scientists. However I didn't like the
idea of mentioning "the fact remains that the missile can reach most
parts of China" in this article. It sounds provocative and damaging
perhaps the media should at least understand this.
This success of India successfully developing ICBM proves that achieving anything is possible. Let us extend the spirit of this success to the battle against inequality and injustice faced by millions of people especially underprivileged children and women. If India can manufacture ICBM, certainly India can achieve anything else!
Congradulations to DRDO ! It is really a great achievement to develop a long range missile indigeneously. I do not know if it would ever be used for its intended purpose. It would certainly satisfy our immediate psychological needs like telling the world that we reached elite club and also put a check to any threats from our neighbours. We had spent lot of money on this achievement even though our R&D spend is just a meager percentage of less than 1% of our GDP. It would be really a boon to our country if this missile technology is used for Civilian purposes say like for Cloud Seeding, spraying pesticides on a wider area, use in some combination to increase speed of transportation vehicles etc..etc. Our government too can easily increase our R&D budget to more than 2% of our GDP (Israel spends 4.1% of their GDP for R&D, Japs spend 3.0% of their GDP) if our Defence technology is leveraged quite significantly for Civilian purposes increasing our productivity.

While the event is a technical milestone, ballistic missiles and nuclear
weapons would do very little to prevent the type of military conflicts we
can expect in the 21st century. The era of overt, large scale wars between
nations are long past. Covert capabilities like electronic warfare and
information espionage are far more important than the ability to wipe out
cities. So is the ability to win short, limited battles, where modern
conventional weapons play a major role. In my opinion, ballistic missiles
are an easier technology to master when compared to modern conventional
weapons like fighter aircraft, battle tanks and short range guided
missiles. In such areas the defence ministry and DRDO have fallen woefully
short of delivering the goods. For our own good, I hope we pare down our
churlish "India is the best" jingoism and learn to be a little self critical and humble in our views.
This is unthinkable. Now that India has proven its so called nuclear capability, it should now focus fully and with all its heart on lifting the living standards of common people whose sweat and labour has given the government the money to spend on this unwanted nuclear warheads.Congratulations and Best Wishes for the Scientists who added ICBM as one

I congratulate every Indian for this success. But being an Indian and from the State of Bushes, I have to admit that these missiles are of no use to common Indian. What we the people of India is suffering the most is Maoism and Naxelism. We should take steps to stop people from joining such organizations, which can only take place by providing proper education and a stable government. We should be more concerned about corruption and instability in market, than to think of methods to increase our Arsenal to such an extent.

While I partake in this celeberations, my heart bleeds looking at the plight of millions of indians who still lack basic amenites like electricity, sanitation, health and drinking water. No amount of achievements in nuclear arsenel and their delivery system is going to lift the average living standards of the common man. On reflection and in realistin terms, no country, absolutely no country in its right mind would ever strike in anger at any other country with nuclear weapons. This is unthinkable. What an experience, to read this and related items on India's advanced weapon technology while the same issue confronts me with a simultaneous pop up advertisement in the right column - it features a smiling, very young girl. I wonder about the self-confidence, both personal and national, that Gandhiji had in mind (hailed by Germany's new President Gauck in his recent inaugural address). Mind boggling questions, no answers in sight (yet).

No doubt, the successful launch of an ICBM is a mile-stone in our
quest for perfection in the missile technology. India is desparately
doing this to attain some parity with only one country in the world.
Our hostile neighbour, China. And China has reacted blowing hot and
cold over the launch of this ICBM. At the government level, it is
showing an olive branch. But the dark message from the Party side
makes it very clear. That in spite of these rocket rattlings, it
reminds India that she is still way behind China militarily and not
likely to catch up with it in the foreseeable future. Really we are
more unsafe with our missile system than without. In case of a war
with China, we may face total destruction and annihilation from their
missiles than we can cause on them as China is militarily and
geographically well placed for a successful war with India. A question
therefore arises whether our pursuit of developing and improving our
missile system for military purpose will be objective.

Congratulations to our great nation! I believe that its high time that organisations like DRDO should re-channelise their fundings and start recruiting brains from IITs ,AIIMS and other premier institutes.It'll definitely accelerate our deterrant program manifold.
It gives me mixed feelings: Yes, it's a proud moment for the Indian
Scientists to showoff their mettle and precision (assuming all the
technologies are developed in situ / de novo in India, not Russia or
other countries; it could also trigger the Arms Race in the
neighborhood.. If India wants to compare and contrast with China, she
has to concede that Chinese are well ahead of the game, and maybe,
Pakistanis, Bangladeshis and Srilankans are well behind her. In a
country where nearly 1100 million Indians (India91%) struggle to earn
Rs 150 per person per day, such costly ICBMs are mere Ornaments of
Paranoia without any real practical use, I am afraid.
This is hardly anything to rejoice and cheer about. Developing and
launching ballistic missiles like this will not make India a super power
especially when millions starve every night and millions more are
discriminated against in the name of caste and religion.

I have been waiing eagerly for this day. What a great news for a great nation like ours that never invaded others in its long history. The missile will be for the good of the world, and the most peaceful nations should possess the most powerful weapons. 60 years of freedom from colonialism have been enough for an impoverished nation to claim its place in the world. It is gratifying to note the endorsement from PRC, that has rightly pointed out that India is not a rival. What a great day for huminity and world peace. India shouldn't waste too many resources on these WMD, and should instead wipe out the corruption that is holding back bare essentials from 100's of millions of Indians for whom freedom from poverty is still a far away dream.

Even in the current scenario where the corruption is at its peak, with the uneducated politicians and where the PM of country is controlled by a stupid women from other country our respected scientists achieved the best. On one side, we have developed these technologies by investing crores of rupees over the years, we should also look options to make business out of this. We should make money from this and earn foreign currency by this technology. And DRDO should also develop technology to arrest violent activities that happens inside India which affects peace and prosperity of the country, especially in J&K and terrorist affected states. Also the nation is now in a position to seriously think on reforming our food and agriculture industry than any other industry. All central and state governments should integrate on this and pave the way for another green revolution. I would love to see some advancement in short distance combat ordance technology like Infrared sensing devices, unmanned search devices with GPS, etc. Also good level of protection to our Armed forces, like better bullet proof vests, mine detector boots, etc. Being an engineer I know that building such a technology is not expensive these days. Good engineering brains and better recruitment strategies can change the whole look out of our Defense system.

A BIG DAY for India. I was impatiently waiting for the results of the Agni-V launch and the news of its success has come as a perfect start for the day. It’s a momentous occasion for India and the entire credit goes to the committed group of scientists who worked dedicatedly to achieve this milestone. Big Congratulations to the scientific community and also a big Thank you for making us proud. Your vision and hard-work has paid off and has propelled India to an elite group of nations who can boast of such advance technology. I join the nation in congratulating our scientists and all other institutions that ensured the success of Agni-V and duly hope that they will continue their good work to take India to even greater heights. Let us catch up in other areas of technology. Some great achievements in
space, defence and services sector are all that the biggest democracy
has to show! Indians can do much more; focus is needed and good
leadership too! To do this we need to clean up our politics and
parliamentary governance. The relatively clean military also needs to

Successful launch is great feat! A mere glance at the technology make it even more awesome. Here is a total self reliant project with no chance of technology import The designers, manufacturing and integration technocrats on their own, make it even more gratifying. Quite a contrast to not so glorious foray in indigenous aircraft manufacturing efforts. Paradoxically it is the very existence non denial regime, has ensured India does not figure among notable in aviation field. Powerful Western aviation companies unrestrained by embargo have managed to cramp and scuttle the Indian initiatives. Pity, the extraordinary engineers available within the country is not being effectively used forcing the talent to seek greener pasture abroad.

should be a Submarine launched version of this missile, so that we've a

Please allow me to add my humble voice to the congratulations which are being rightly showered on the scientists and technicians of the DRDO.
There has been some thought to the question of increasing the reach of India's missiles. Let us remember, for instance, that the distance from the North Pole to the South Pole is 24,859.82 miles (40,008 km). So, perhaps India needs to have ICBMs that can go about half that distance, say, 12,500 miles (or 20,000 km), to ensure that no one in the wide world shall think in adventurous terms about dictating anything to India.
India's non-proliferation record has been impeccable and no one seems to be alarmed at the latest testfiring of the Agni V. We should build on this goodwill and emphasize that India stands for peace and non-initation of military operations on its own for any objective. That is, India should not be the first to begin a war but should only respond when a war is imposed on it, as it was on the last five occasions. V. C. Bhutani

forces and our soldiers are at the mercy of the opponents be it naxals

Hold on folks. As long as it's in test phase and not inducted and armed, it's no use. Same with INS Arihant and the missiles planned for it. We need that military industrial infrastructure badly and pretty badly to mass produce the tested weapons and deployed.

The entire nation is proud of the immaculate launch of Agni 5.This
feat ensures the defense supremacy of India amid its suspicious neighbors.
It is a good thing, but can we see some of these technology make their way into
civilian domain to help our quality of life? For example, why don't we stop
depending on Uranium reactors and go full ahead with Liquid Fluoride Thorium
Reactors? They are much safer, have a short life span and we have plenty of thorium in India. Our scientists are capable of doing it, why are we lacking the political will?
Who know whether the missile hit the payload or not? Is there
independent verification for these claims by scientists? We need some
verification, since the security of the country is at stake.
Testing a nuclear capable missile in absolute or ideal world is never justified but seeing the intense armed rivalry between nations be it France-uk, or US-Russia or India-China, it definitely counterbalances the heavyweights. A welcome move and all kudos to our scientists for their tremendous effort. High 5 !!!

We have shown to the world what can we do within limited means. The indigenously prepared Agni V is an example of thousands of people's
aspiration that now fulfilled and ready to fruition of similar
outstanding achievements in the field of science and technology
related to our defence system. We do not copy but create a thing with
the intention to balance the peace and not for spreading fear as
others do. My good wishes are for those (scientists, technicians etc)
who took so much pain in developing such an immaculate nuclear
warheads carrying device for our defence line. They have made our
county proud. Many congratulation to our country men!
It is great news that Agni-5 has been successful.Now India has one more warhead to defend herself.
But only long range and large weapons cannot cope for stopping the whole lot of enemy armies. And there is also a rising requirement for development of small arms in the use of man-to-man combat. It would prove a great support to India's weaponry as well as the defence forces as the main interest is all towards the "Big Ones"(as I call them) lately.

A Job well done by everyone involved in the project. But, I do agree with Mr. Srinivasan here to a great extent. We have lot of other challenges to face, first internally and then externally. Looking at the way things are moving in the country, the situation seems very unfortunate and hopless. It is good to hear some good news somewhere. It just gives some hope when we've resigned to the fate! But I, personally am not able to accept that this one thing can overshadow all that is happening and give an impression that we are headed towards progress. Frankly, this Agni V could've happened long back if only things worked the way they should.
We need similar success in other fields too. We also need to harness
our different strengths to alleviate the poverty in our nation.
Selective growth will not help us in the long run. There are millions of our citizens who do not have access to water and sanitation. We should use these new technologies for generating wealth for the nation, maybe even launching satellites for other nations to help earn foreign exchange and use it for poverty alleviation, health,
education and improvement of infrastructure.
Entire country is proud of this success and Hearty congratulation to the scientists who worked for this project.

This is just an eyewash to refurbish public opinion re Govt's defence preparedness. What are the capabilities that were tested and proven? What are the capabilities being promised? By when? Multiple nuclear war heads? Really? As for DRDO, has anybody attempted a project review? Input (Man Years and Costs including the ubiquitous Babu and the Peon as well as vehicles and petrol) versus outputs (weapons with specific capabilities and reliability)? Historic as well as projections? DRDO and Defense PSUs are yet more unaccountable and profligate arms of the unaccountable and profligate Quota-Corruption Raj.

Congratulations to the team of scientists and engineers. I wish more bright people join organizations like DRDO and help improve India's indigenous research capabilities rather than end up being part of the brain drain to other countries.
It is no wrong to say that national security comes at topmost priority
for any nation but one would have to introspect a little to look
deeply into home affairs as well. The nation where one third of its
population falls below poverty line which is define at such lower
levels, should refrain itself from developing such a big dollar toys
which is having probability of getting used only in cases of extreme
conditions of conflicts with other nations which is having very rare
chance of happening and also why would a nation needs such a high end
intercontinental missile when most threatening country resides
alongside. Rather than spending on such less needed, overcautious
luxuries, we should concentrate on providing employment, quality
education, safe living to the overbearing people of this country.

Proud of the scientists of the country. Keep up the good work. But
there is an immediate and excruciating need to also develop small
scale aerospace solution some what on the lines of 'Netra' that would
enhance the capability of India fighting internal problems in order to
rise high on the scale of Law and Order. Because only after we achieve
high threshold and predictability in being a law and order state we
can really concentrate on becoming a welfare state. But yes path to higher ideals can only be taken on concrete stepping stones. This is one of those. Hope we utilize this stability and thrust in the right direction.
