Parliament session may be extended by three days to pass legislation
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal on Monday told journalists that the government was hopeful of moving a Lokpal Bill which would be acceptable to a majority of the parties.
“The revised Bill may not be acceptable to all but we are hopeful that it would be by and large acceptable to a majority.”
Explaining the rationale behind introducing a new Bill rather than moving amendments to the existing one, Mr. Bansal said the number of amendments were too many and it would be ‘messy' to carry them in the current Bill. “The idea is to have a cleaner Bill.”
He cited the Companies Amendment Bill, which was introduced in 2009. The government decided to introduce a fresh one this year after it accepted most of the over 170 amendments made by the Parliamentary Standing Committee.
Introduction of a new Bill would involve some procedural issues. The government was required to circulate a new Bill to the MPs at least two days in advance and could be introduced only five days after it was circulated.
The Speaker could waive the required period for circulation by a day and give permission for introduction without waiting for five days.
Mr. Bansal said that if the Cabinet approved the Bill on Tuesday it could be circulated the same day and moved for consideration and passage either on Wednesday or Thursday.
While the current session is scheduled to end on Thursday, the government has already requested the members to be prepared for another day. In the event of its passage in the Lok Sabha after eight hours of debate, it could go to the Rajya Sabha the next day.
Earlier in the day, Law Minister Salman Khursheed said a group of senior Ministers was working on the draft of the proposed changes to the Bill and expressed the hope that it would be completed at the most by Tuesday night.

I am not having any clue that strong lokpal bill will come with CBI, CITIZENS CHARTER, PM, JUDICIAL under lokpal bill. There is certain mass movement required in support of strong lokpal in all the places. Also to choose best politicians is very difficult across the party lines. it seems one alone loksatta party founded by Jaya prakash narayana is best of any. I will support loksatta member participants in any of elections and i will vote for them and also spread to my colleagues, this is only the way to have clean politicians, ofcourse strong lokpal is also there to ensure these elected won't get corrupt.`
Lokpal bill is puting before parliament let us discuss and parliament will take better decison. Donot dictate parliament I am requesting team Anna. If you have any political motive just you form a party you involve democratic way donot dictate elected government
Why will politicians oppose to the dishonest effort of dirty community? It would have been a problem in passing if a good bill was there. India's democracy is a populist democracy based on count of votes.
Why this word MAJORITY again? This is one of the stupid word being misused by our politicians. Let the bill be address the issues of ALL INDIANS.
I have an intuitive feeling that the proposed new Lokpal Bill that is going to be brought by the government will be a farce and that the ministers and officials concerned, are just playing with superficial words before introducing the bill in the parliament. Anna ji's dream of a corruption-free India and thereby a healthy society, is not going to be realized without a struggle that is long-drawn out, and which Anna ji is well aware of.
Seems UPA will pass a farce bill in hurry with voice vote. That will start the agitation too..
There should not be any problem in passing a bill, even with most stringent laws possible. Every honble person sitting there knows how to escape the laws, and that's the reason how they are sitting there. Can we implement any law is the soul question in front of us. And a common man who is taking 1000 to 2000 rs to cast his vote, will he go to jail or not, which is the gross root of corruption. There is hardly anyone in india who is neither involved nor effected by corruption. What we are doing all these days, and the biggest share is from politicians, who are going to play key role in passing this bill, wish at least the politicians dont demand any money from Anna saab to cast their vote to pass this bill, which any way is not going to affect the malignant poiiticians of india.
