Takes cognisance of a newspaper report that hundreds of such operations are performed every year
Taking cognisance of a newspaper report about several hospitals and clinics in Indore performing surgeries on baby girls to change their sex, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has asked the State government to undertake an investigation with a team of doctors, known for high professional competence and ethical standards.
The Commission has sought a detailed report within 15 days, giving facts, figures and circumstances of the cases, list of doctors/hospitals practising genitoplasty and action taken or contemplated against them.
It also wants to know the measures taken by the Madhya Pradesh government at the State/district and local level in terms of publicity/awareness campaign against the adverse effects of sex change operations as well as female foeticide and infanticide.
It has asked the government why measures to create awareness against preference for a male child have been ineffective.
‘Curb unethical practice’
The State government has also been asked to take all necessary action to combat the unethical practice, including cancellation of the licence and registration of doctors and hospitals involved and initiating penal action against them under IPC and other applicable laws/guidelines.
According to the newspaper report, every year hospitals in Indore perform hundreds of such operations on baby girls. Genitoplasty is performed on children who are just 5 years old.
The procedure costs about Rs. 1.5 lakh.

This is so shocking.I am a doctor in America and heard it on the Internet.Who are these doctors selling these ideas to these people? This evil needs to be nipped in the bud. These doctors need to be stopped in their tracks. These doctors doing these atrocities should be thrown in jail.Parents who are so stupid will be better off with no kids.
Shocking! We have the bulkiest constitution in the world that strongly forbids any discrimination against women and have a well 'developed' jurisdiction for the enforcement of the law. Still why we always find loopholes in the system? It is high time now. We should urgently reconsider our basic attitudes. The doctors who did this are not the so-called illiterate Indians. Reading along with the findings of the recent census, it is getting clear that the middle class Indians have more aversion for girl child. This is shocking.
Mother India!
We,your children have reached to new heights in our cruelty towards
your daughters,Till now we are just mass murderers of a million yet to
be born baby girls(read it as female foeticide),now we started to maim
the genitals off our baby girls,Let grow to be mutilated males, still
they are cheaper to raise and bring us dowry.
Bless us!!.
Horrifying news. Ruthless and senseless parents ruining their own childrens future.
Millions of girls disappeared from India because of female foeticide and infanticide. And now this report of most barbaric, unethical and immoral case of hundreds of genitoplasty each year in Indore hospitals. It is noteworthy that all these are practiced by the well to do rich, middle class family in India. It is this class for which money is 'God'.The same class continues these sinister act even when they and live in the USA.The entire Indians must bend their head in shame.
This is Embarrassing... Govt. should give such a punishment to those people who done this so that other people dont want to do this in future.
What phenomenal and pathetic ignorance on the part of the parents who seek such operations. Evidently they do not know that their new pseudo-son will never have functioning male genitals, never be marriageable. The lives of such children will be destroyed, and for nothing, not even for the imagined superiority of maleness. Even the most bigoted parents would not agree to such an operation.
