Opposition demands Mayawati's resignation

A day after the Kannauj and Basti incidents, a 35-year-old woman and mother of two children was allegedly gang-raped and then set ablaze in her house by three persons in Etah district late on Sunday night. Elsewhere, a Dalit girl was killed by three persons in Karnailganj area of Gonda district. Her body was recovered from a field in Katholi village on Sunday night. The possibility of rape has not been ruled out.

In another incident, a 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two youths in Sirsaganj area in Firozabad district on Sunday.

Along with the Kannauj and Basti cases, five incidents of similar nature have been reported from different parts of the State in the last couple of days.

The Etah incident was reported from Sabhapur village under the Nidhauli Kalan police station area.

According to Special DG (Law and Order) Brij Lal, five persons entered the woman's house around 2.30 a.m. Three of them were identified by the victim as Sunil Yadav, Suman Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav. The woman in her dying declaration said she was raped by Sunil and when she raised an alarm was set ablaze. He said efforts are on to arrest the culprits. The Station House Officer of Nidhauli police station, Narendra Pal Singh, has been removed for making it to be a case of suicide.

In Gonda district, a minor Dalit girl was allegedly killed by three youths. She had reportedly gone missing on June 17. In the FIR lodged by the girl's father, Nanke, Mithailal and Bahadur were named as accused. Mr. Lal said two accused have been arrested.

In the Firozabad incident, a girl was allegedly raped by Shanu with whom she was supposedly having an affair. He has been arrested, Mr. Lal added.

Taking a strong note of a spate of such incidents, Leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Shivpal Singh Yadav, demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mayawati and said a special session of the House should be immediately convened as the law and order situation in the State had deteriorated.

Stating that the law and order situation was a shambles, the president of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, said the Mahila Congress would launch an agitation in the first week of July.
