“Indians are held together by a common Sanskrit-Urdu culture”
Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju on Sunday attributed simmering Hindu-Muslim tensions to a deliberate rewriting of history to project Muslim rulers as intolerant and bigoted, whereas ample evidence existed to show the reverse was true.
The judge also said that Indians were held together by a common Sanskrit-Urdu culture which guaranteed that India would always remain secular.
Justice Katju said the myth-making against Muslim rulers, which was a post-1857 British project, had been internalised in India over the years. Thus, Mahmud Ghazni's destruction of the Somnath temple was known but not the fact that Tipu Sultan gave an annual grant to 156 Hindu temples. The judge, who delivered the valedictory address at a conference held to mark the silver jubilee of the Institute of Objective Studies, buttressed his arguments with examples quoted from D.N. Pande's History in the Service of Imperialism.
Dr. Pande, who summarised his conclusions in a lecture to members of the Rajya Sabha in 1977, had said: “Thus under a definite policy the Indian history textbooks were so falsified and distorted as to give an impression that the medieval period of Indian history was full of atrocities committed by Muslim rulers on their Hindu subjects and the Hindus had to suffer terrible indignities under Islamic rule.”
Justice Katju said Dr. Pande came upon the truth about Tipu Sultan in 1928 while verifying a contention — made in a history textbook authored by Dr. Har Prashad Shastri, the then head of the Sanskrit Department in Calcutta University — that during Tipu's rule 3,000 Brahmins had committed suicide to escape conversion to Islam. The only authentication Dr. Shastri could provide was that the reference was contained in the Mysore Gazetteer. But the Gazetteer contained no such reference.
Further research by Dr. Pande showed not only that Tipu paid annual grants to 156 temples, but that he enjoyed cordial relations with the Shankaracharya of Sringeri Math to whom he had addressed at least 30 letters. Dr. Shastri's book, which was in use at the time in high schools across India, was later de-prescribed. But the unsubstantiated allegation continued to masquerade as a fact in history books written later.
Justice Katju said the secular-plural character of India was guaranteed both by the Indian Constitution and the unmatched diversity of the Indian population. The judge attributed the diversity to the fact of India being a land of old immigrants, dating back to 10,000 years (Justice Katju and fellow judge Gyan Sudha Misra first propounded this thesis in a judgment, excerpts from which were carried as an op-ed article in The Hindu edition dated January 12, 2011). The diversity, reflected in the wide range of religions, castes, languages and physical attributes found among the descendants, led the founding fathers to draft a Constitution with strong federal features. “Diversity is our asset and our guarantee for staying secular,” said Justice Katju.
Earlier, a resolution passed at the conference urged the government to forthwith set up an Equal Opportunity Commission as recommended by the Rajinder Sachar Committee.
The resolution said: “The conference resolves that inclusive growth is not possible without equal opportunities being given to all sections of society, particularly minorities and other marginalised communities.”

My grandfather was born in Ottappalam, Kerala, in 1899. In those days it was called Valluvanad. I remember him telling me as a small child ie, in 1981, about the way Tippu had attacked, Valluvanad, a story told to him by his father. Men were caught and asked whether they need to shave their head, or let the sword cut off their necks. Upon shaving their heads they used to be sent to Ponnani, to don the cap and be a Muslim. My grandfather had no reason, to lie to me. This oral history can be checked with a lot of old people in that Area. I'm not saying that we need to hate Muslims for what Tippu did, of course not. But lets also not forget, that this land mother India, gave space and living to a large number of refugees from central Asia, Persia, Turkey and Arabia...But some of them forgot her benevolence and started talking about the Two nation theory. This should not happen again.
The judge has perhaps chosen to see only one side of the coin. First, it's true that there were some kings likes Akbar & Tipu who were somewhat benevolent in their treatment of Hindus but majority of them with likes of Muhamad Ghazni, Ghaznavi, Babur, Aurangzeb, Ahmed Shah Abdali, Nadir Shah were ruthless attackers and were responsible for death of millions.
Secodly, secularism means equal treatment of all the religions with no bias from the state. Alas, what is being practised is rampant appeasement of some sections of society under the garb of secularism.
Good that someone has realised that a group of people who have vested interest in creating communal conflict and distort history to suit their interests have been identified and have been openly critized by a man holding the highest judicial position of the country. These group of people have not only distorted history in the name of religion but have also been spreading misleading facts about the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi. These people should be booked and punished for working against the interests of the nation.

Hinduism is most likely a synthesis of the religion that came into India with the migratory wave of Aryans in the second millennium B.C.E. and the indigenous religion of the native people. The resulting culture became classical Hinduism. Historically speaking, the Vedic religion evolved from 1500 BCE. Shaivite religion was practiced by the Dravidians from 2000 BCE. Prior to the 1920s, the only source that spoke of the pre-Aryan people was the Vedic literature of early Hinduism. Since this was the religious literature of the Aryans, it is decidedly biased, with negative references to India and its religions. The Indian people themselves were portrayed as uncivilized and barbaric. The new evidence of the 1920s told a different story. It was then that excavations in northwestern India revealed complexes of cities along the Indus River. Indeed, as early as 2500 BCE, there were signs of an advanced civilization in the Indus Valley. This civilization - including smaller villages and cities - sprawled over 100 square miles of the region. By some estimates, it may be the largest political community prior to the Roman Empire. Cities were elaborate, laid out in rectangular blocks, with drainage systems, and some 40,000 people per city.

700 of my community members lost their lives to Tippu's soldiers only because they were peaceful Brahmin Srivaishnavas. One does not hate present day Muslims just because my ancestors perished at the hands of Tippu's men. I hate the very idea of whitewashing bad deeds by the Moslem rulers of India for the sake of preserving a fickle vote bank. If we are scared to speak the truth, we will be scared to do anything. We have moved on. but when will the secular crowd that has made an industry of 'Gujarat pogrom' move on? Read what Sanjith Menon has said above and you will realise that the Moghul rulers and their successors were not all milk and honey as the Hon. Justice says!
I fully agree with the idea that the Muslim rulers were secular and did not differentiate their subjects on the basis of their religion. Auranzeb considered a religious bigot too granted land and money to the Hindu temples.Tipu Sultan ruled like a true king but his rule recorded highest demand by the state in terms of land revenue, that is 40% of produce. We hardly get any parallel to it in our history.
It's pointless to extrapolate what happened in the past to the present day. The past is what it is and cannot be changed. There may have been atrocities, there may have been peace. What is required is to accept that as a part of our nation and move on. Today, India is a secular republic which is a good example for tolerance for other nations. No amount of information about Mahmud of Ghazni's Somnath sacking or Ashoka's Kalinga massacres is going to change my belief that we're stronger because despite all those events, we're a peaceful country that accepts one and all.
Babur, Aurangzeb can never be claimed as communal. They were one of the best rulers then. This judge came out what a muslim cannot state all these openly in India. As a muslim, i cannot buy a small piece of land in Marine Drive, Mumbai. These are facts prevailing here. We remain always proud Indians in spite of all these difficulties. Never History presented to us properly by most of the authors.
If the Muslim rulers had been forceful about converting the Hindus into Muslims, then how come the South Asian sub-continent has remained largely Hindu majority till date? Islamic rulers gave full protection to the people of the nation with some taxations levied on them for protection called jizya. The Hindutva cadre had been fomenting such myth for their personal gains.
Good to see some prominent people in the country speaking up for what is true. Every case has to be scrutinised on its own merit. Yes, there were some Muslim rulers who were extremely cruel - their murderous campaigns will dwarf even Hitler's persecution of the jews. But, there were those who were benevolent - rare though they might be. Stereotyping communities is one of the greatest dangers we face today. Just as Narendra Modi and his cohorts will never be forgotten for their role in the Gujrat massacre - no matter how many years pass, and the wheels of justice grind slow in this country; similarly, the cruelties of the past should not be forgotten. What is extremely essential is that we don't paint everyone with the same brush.
There is no reason or justification to be a bigoted Hindu, hating all Muslims of present day India. Also, there is no reason to believe that Muslims everywhere are patently secular, receptive and protective of other faiths. See the examples as set by so called Islamic states; not a single permit entry of other faiths to settle in their lands. Even those countries, which historically have minorities of other faiths, systematically annihilate or persecute them, e.g. Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan. None consider other faiths as yet other way to reach communion with almighty and give them special treatment, even as they continue to preach for religious and political rights of their brethren elsewhere! So the moot question is why Muslims in India are secular while the followers of same faith elsewhere are not?
Having stated as above, one must also acknowledge that if millions of (supposedly low caste) Hindus today lead a normal human life, thanks must partially go to these bigoted Muslim warriors in taming and hence humanizing the Hindu orthodoxy. It is also a fact that millions are still suffering at the hands of the very same Hindu orthodoxy in the interiors of our country. It is a paradox that even today, while some of them continue to talk of the atrocities of Muslim rulers of yore, some still happily continue with their atrocious behavior upon fellow Hindus. Further, Just as secular-plural character of India was guaranteed both by the Indian Constitution and the unmatched diversity of the Indian population, our subjugation was also guaranteed by this heterogeneous diversity, with each considering the other grouping as inferior or superior to self; see how our politicians divide and loot us even today when corruption threatens the very idea INDIA.
In kerala,in the time of Tippu Sultan women were not allowed wear or put any cloth on their upper part of the body. No Hindu rulers did anything against this. But, after the entry of Tippu Sultan to Malabar,he changed the custom and gave the dignity to the women folk.
One feels immensely grateful to Justice Katju for throwing some light at our 'history' books. As far as Tipu Sultan is concerned, I have noticed a systematic campaign by some 'scholars' to tarnish his image so that he doesn't get his due credit. The progressive steps taken by Tipu are still yielding fruits in Karnataka. Sericulture is one of them, and land-reform is another important step taken by Tipu which helped the landless poor a lot. The Lalbagh is the brainchild of Hyder and Tipu. Tipu's cordial relations with Sringeri mutt is well documented. So far the allegation of his 'harassment' of Brahmins is concerned, I would like to mention here the fact that his Diwan had been a Brahmin. And that gentleman(Poornaiah)joined the British immediately after the death of Tipu!
Those who are saying that Mysore Gazetteer did not contain references to Tipu converting Hindus.. read the Mysore Gazetteer again. From the original published in 19th Century using Google Books. It is all there.

Trying to appropriate or correct history by few unverified comments does not and cannot undo the damage and violence by Muslim rulers. That's not to say that there were never any good Muslim rules - like Akbar. But the fact of the matter is that Muslim chroniclers themselves proudly proclaim the violence, genocide and temple destruction carried by Muslim Kings like the Bahamanis, Adil Shah, Tughlaq, Aurangzeb who were in no small measure driven by their interpretation of Islam. One comment here even says that Aurangzeb and Babar were not communal! It only shows us the result of selective historical education. Even an unbiased, neutral reader can easily conclude the Babar and Aurangzeb were bigots. The firmans of Aurangzeb which order temple destruction and construction of new temples can even be seen now. The city of Vijayanagar was put to fire and sword for months together under the combined armies of the Deccan sultanates(http://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/3310/pg3310.html). The Bahamanis had actually taken oath of killing a certain number of idolaters.
All this said, it should not drive Hindu and Muslim communities to hate each other. We have history of co-operation and amicable living, based on respect for each other. Shivaji's cordial relationships with Muslim troops and some Sardars is well known. History is based on facts, not on whimsical opinions and thoughts. And how can facts be changed? Justice Katju is highlighting only some facets, while ignoring other facets all together. While the intention to bridge the divides might be good, it should not be based on false facts(Tipu was not a bigot and Aryan Immigration Theory). It should be built on the base of truths.
To me, the fact the some of Muslim rulers were intolerant and thoroughly bigoted shows how selective and intolerant interpretations of scripture can drive even otherwise sane rules into committing mindless atrocities, and it is continuing even now. Terror groups justify their acts as part of Jihad. I cannot see the difference between the two.
As for the Aryan immigration theory, the learned scholars are ignoring the recent studies in the Aryan question. The Quest for the Origins of Vedic Culture by Edwin Bryant gives a detailed discussion between the 2 camps(not just the opinions of one) - and Edwin Bryant himself concludes that he cannot take a position as to which one may be more correct. Why do our leaders here ignore this debate and go on repeating this immigration thesis as if it happened in reality?
My reply to all religious extremists is that'There are two sides to every coin'. There is no element in this universe which has only drawbacks and no plus points and vice versa. I see a large no. of Hindus(mainly on the Internet, apart from the Hindutva brigade) becoming bigoted extremists and holding fanatical ideologies as part of their core beleifs. The reason often being - The intolerance of Muslims and Christian rulers in the past as well as the violent filled histories of both, justifying hatred and communal violence against these communities today.
Let us all understand that it is human nature to capitalise or exaggerate the negatives of others & demonise them through propoganda for vested interests. This holds true not only in the case of religion, but anything else in life. What I cant stand is that a large no. of educated hindus today are falling prey to the trap set by Hindutva leaders & ideologies, who are merely using them as pawns for their agenda. What a hindu thinks of a Muslim,Christian or anybody else in a negative light is the same vice versa.Anybody who knows about the history of hinduism would say that hindus are responsible for discriminating against hundreds of millions, possibly billions of people through casteism, countless more victimised in the form of social evils or even the suppression/destruction of Buddhism and Jainism in India(there are articles coming up regarding these references),killing of lakhs of Muslims during the partition, apart from the communal violence which has shook our country in the past 27 years.
So,let us all realise that human beings are indeed sinful & wicked creatures, who at circumstances would not hesitate to pick up arms or persecute/destroy others for whatever reason. This is evident in the history of mankind throughout, irrespective of religion, caste, nation, culture or race. If educated & qualified people too fail to understand this & turn bigots, then we are a very sorry lot indeed.
