Venkateswara Reddy, alias Deepak, a senior Maoist leader and member of the central military commission of the CPI (Maoist), was arrested from the Behala Thana area of the city on Tuesday evening.

Reddy, according to police sources, is a close associate of CPI(Maoist) polit bureau member Kishanji. He is believed to have carried out Kishanji’s military plans.

The police also suspect that Reddy may have had a hand in last month’s attack on an Eastern Frontier Rifles (EFR) camp at Silda in Paschim Medinipur district, in which 24 EFR personnel were killed.

The State police were tipped off about Reddy’s presence in the city by the Andhra Pradesh police.
