The Congress on Saturday demanded the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Amit Shah, for his “hate speech’’ in Muzaffarnagar on Friday in which he reportedly asked Jats of the area to avenge the killing of their community members in last year’s riots by voting for the BJP.

In a petition to the Election Commission, the Congress said Mr. Shah committed an offence under Section 125 of The Representation of the People Act, 1951, and should be arrested along with other BJP workers.

Mr. Shah’s call for badla (revenge) to protect the izzat (honour) of Jats comes days after Congress candidate Imran Masood was seen on video saying he would “chop” BJP leader Narendra Modi “into pieces.”
