The Union Government on Friday started the process of taking over the controversy-ridden Adarsh Society in Colaba, as per Supreme Court orders.

In July this year, the apex court has issued orders asking the Defence Ministry to secure the high rise. The court had also issued notices to petitioners who had demanded its demolition. While the Ministry was supposed to take over the building within a week, the SC later extended the deadline to August 5.

On Friday morning, defence personnel reached the building and secured the premises.

“On behalf of Government of India, Indian Army is taking over possession of the building from Adarsh Society to ensure its security and prevent any encroachment. The process is being supervised by a Registrar nominated by the Bombay High Court,” a Defence spokesperson said on Friday.

Sources said that the process of officially taking over the building is expected to take two to three days.
