A policeman was injured in an alleged scuffle with Army men in Kupwara district of Kashmir on Friday evening.

A Munshi-rank official, Shabir Ahmad, was beaten up allegedly by soldiers following his intervention during a search of vehicles in the area.

Police sources said Mr. Ahmad tried to whisk away a civilian who was held up by soldiers of 41 Rashtriya Rifles near the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Kupwara.

“The policeman intervened following misbehaviour of the soldiers with the local people,” the police sources said.

“The Army had seized the vehicle of a local commuter and the Munshi had gone there to get his vehicle released. However, the Army didn’t release the vehicle which resulted in a minor altercation. The matter was later resolved amicably,” Senior Superintendent of Police, Kupwara, Shamsher Singh said.

This is the second such incident since July 21, when the Army was accused of beating up policemen inside a police station in Ganderbal.

PDP worker shot dead

Meanwhile, suspected militants shot dead a Peoples Democratic Party worker at Anantnag’s Dailgam area on Saturday.

A police official said the victim, Muhammad Isaaq Parray, was shot in the head by suspected militants who barged into his house. “He was declared dead in the hospital,” said the police.

The Army on Saturday morning sealed nine villages for a search operation in Shopian. “However, no arrests were made in the operation that was called off in the afternoon,” said the police.
