The Hindu was misled into reporting that a Sandeep Kumar of New Delhi secured the 780th rank in the Civil Services Examination, 2015 (‘Dalit from Delhi slum clears civil services exam’, May 19). This rank has been obtained by Sai Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Boudh, Odisha, according to official results posted on the Department of Personnel and Training website.
The story was written without adequately checking the veracity of the claims made by the imposter, who has subsequently admitted to perpetrating the hoax.
We regret this serious error of judgment.
