In a bid to mollify the fasting TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao demanding a separate Telangana, the Andhra Pradesh government on Sunday decided to withdraw the cases filed against him in the past week.
“We have decided to withdraw the cases filed against him since he was taken into preventive custody on November 29 as a goodwill gesture. We request him to call off his fast and help restore peace in the state”, Chief minister K. Rosaiah told reporters after an “informal” meeting of the State cabinet.
In an effort to assuage the feeling of government employees from Telangana region, the State government would pass a resolution in the State Assembly reaffirming that Hyderabad is not a “free zone” for police recruitment, he said.
The government employees from Telangana and the TRS were agitated over a Supreme Court judgement that declared Hyderabad as a free zone for police recruitment.
The State government has already filed a review petition in the apex court against the judgement.
Though the resolution is not required as the matter is pending before the Supreme Court, the decision to pass the resolution is aimed at addressing the sentiments of government employees and people in Telangana at large who felt “hurt” by the judgement, Mr. Rosaiah said.
The winter session of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly is begining on Monday and it will continue till December 23.
When pointed out that nothing short of granting the separate Telangana would satisfy the TRS and other Telangana protagonists, Mr. Rosaiah said he does not have the power to take a decision on granting the Statehood.
Asked about the goverment’s response to the violent incidents in the State, the Chief Minister assured that the government is taking the necessary steps.
“Despite the preventive measures taken by us, yesterday something has happened. We are trying to correct it. In future, we have told the police department to be more careful,” he said.
Mr. Rosaiah said the violent incidents that took place on Saturday have created a sense of terror among IT companies in the city and general public.
He appealed to the TRS president to call off the fast unto death to help establish peace and normalcy in the State.
