Amid the raging controversy over his statement on the Poonch killings, Defence Minister A.K. Antony on Wednesday briefed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the situation on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir where five troops were killed in an ambush.

Mr. Antony met Dr. Singh against the backdrop of controversy over his statement that the soldiers were killed by “terrorists along with persons dressed in Pakistan Army uniform”.

Mr. Antony has come under severe attack for the statement, with Opposition saying it amounted to giving an escape route to Pakistan which has always been in a denial mode on involvement of its army personnel in any act against India.

He sought to defend his statement, saying it was made on the basis of information received at that time.

Making a suo motu statement in both the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Antony had said an Indian Army patrol, comprising one junior commissioned officer and five other ranks, was “ambushed on our side” of the LoC in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

“The ambush was carried out by approximately 20 heavily-armed terrorists along with persons dressed in Pakistan army uniform,” he said.

“In the ensuing fire fight, five Indian soldiers were martyred and one soldier was injured,” he said.

As opposition party has pointed out, this statement sounds like
dictated by a Pakistani source...
“The ambush was carried out by approximately 20 heavily-armed
terrorists along with persons dressed in Pakistan army uniform,” he
said... Even if it were true and based in info, it means heavily
armed terrorists roam around freely on Pakistan's side. And they
even have tailors to stitch them Pakistani Army uniforms... Our
soilders died protecting our borders, on our side... Why we don't
strike these terrorists??? Let them be crushed on the Pakistani
side.
If we remain spectators to this badsharifi what else we might have
to put up with? Do we lack will to take action against Pakistani
terrorists?

The statement of Defence Minister of India on Poonch killings is really
ridiculous and reflects the lenience of the present Government to
Pakistan.Pakistan is taking advantage of UPA s soft corner towards
minority(Muslims). The Government should take the killings seriously and
act accordingly.Competent persons from majority community should head
the Ministry like defence, external affairs and home.

Violence is no solution. The barbaric act, however shouldn't be a subject to tolerance. For once, it's better to let Kashmir be and decide, where it allgiance lie. Mr. Antony semingly keen in defending Pak. should rather be demanding justice for the martyrs.

We have an amazing capacity to create a controversy out of nothing.
Anthony's brief was drafted by the director of military operations
[DMO] and vetted by the chief of the Army.
