S.P. Udayakumar and Fr. M.P. Jesuraj join Aam Aadmi Party at Idinthakarai in Tirunelveli district on Friday.

Amid resistance from majority of Idinthakarai villagers and members of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), its coordinator S.P. Udayakumar, who was hitherto spearheading the anti-Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project struggle, and his associate Rev. Fr. M.P. Jesuraj joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday.

“My joining the AAP will further strengthen the ongoing struggle against the project and take the issue to the national level with much vigour,” Dr. Udayakumar said justifying his decision.

However, people of this coastal hamlet, who were vociferously supporting the anti-KKNPP struggle since the agitation intensified 30 months ago, kept away from the political ceremony that took place on the village outskirts.

Joining the party in the presence of David Barunkumar Thomas, AAP’s State campaign committee convener, Dr. Udayakumar said he had decided to join the AAP after its high command agreed to fulfil his conditions such as taking people’s opinion on establishing nuclear reactors and decentralisation of power.

“While we’ll take this issue (anti-KKNPP agitation) to the next level, women from Idinthakarai will lead the PMANE and continue the protests here,” he said.

Split denied

Dr. Udayakumar disagreed with the contention that the PMANE had split owing to his joining the AAP.

Those who wanted to continue the anti-KKNPP agitation were against the idea of taking the issue to the political level, he said.

He also said the party high command alone could take a decision on fielding him as AAP’s candidate from the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha segment.

As the Idinthakarai village committee and most of the PMANE members, including M. Pushparayan and R.S. Muhilan, were against the decision, Dr. Udayakumar, who used to address the media either from the protest venue in front of St. Lourdes Church or in the parish priest’s official residence, was asked on Thursday night to organise today’s press conference at St. Antony’s Church situated about 500 m from the protest venue.

Before Delhi elections my support for AAP was 100 %.After their dharna
it became 50%. Now joining hands with someone who doesn't want
progress it's down to zero. It looks like they are specialists in
protests, raise lots of issues in public interest without any ground
work and never progress the protests to the logical end. They have
proved they can't govern and they love the media attention and the
media love to exploit the opportunity. They would have got continued
support from the public if they had just a one point agenda - anti
corruption. No wonder Anna doesn't support AAP.

Udaya Kumar and his group have joined the AAP in order in furtherance of his struggle against Kudankulam Nuclear power project and not drawn to it by its policies .Now AAP has to reveal its policy towards Nuclear power projects in the country .Udaya kumar might have brought his catholic fishermen community to the AAP to strengthen their opposition to the project with some ulterior motives .In Tamil Nadu there is one Nuclear plant running in Kalpakkam for more than three decades .Nothing has happened to it and there has been no opposition to it also from the fishermen there. The proposal to erect a Nuclear power plant in kudankulam had been there for more than three decades .No opposition had been there till very recently till udaya kumar and his catholic fraternity appeared on the scene .The induction of udaya kumar does not auger well for the AAP in Tamil Nadu.

This is another example that given an opportunity AAP will make this
country Venezuela or Cuba.Leader's of AAP have no economic vision, they
can only create chaos.I do not understand why person of the stature of
Yogendra Yadav has failed to understand that only a strong leadership
which can enthuse people with his growth can give prosperity and
unity(which is vital for prosperity)to this country.Perhaps Kejriwal and
Prashant Bhushan does not listen him.
