Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari has accepted a fresh resignation from businessman Vijay Mallya, on a day when the Ethics Committee of the Upper House recommended his expulsion from the House with immediate effect.
“Hamid Ansari, Chairman Rajya Sabha, accepts resignation of Vijay Mallya, resubmitted unconditionally and as per correct procedure,” OSD to Mr. Ansari, Gurdeep Singh Sappal, tweeted on Wednesday. “After SG, Rajya Sabha wrote to Vijay Mallya yesterday informing him of the rejection on procedural grounds, a fresh resignation was sent again today. 2nd resignation letter was sent in original. SG confirmed from Sh. Mallya that resignation tendered was genuine, voluntary and unconditional.”
Earlier in the day, the Ethics Committee recommended his expulsion. “…the Committee unanimously decided at its meeting on 3 May, 2016, to recommend to the House that Dr. Mallya be expelled with immediate effect,” said the committee in its report. The panel said it hoped to send a message to the public that Parliament was committed “to taking such steps as are necessary against erring Members to uphold the dignity and prestige of this great institution.”
