For yet another day on Tuesday, the sixth in a row, the precious hours of Parliament were wasted, as the members of the ruling and Opposition parties disrupted the proceedings on a variety of issues, including the government's decision to allow 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail.
While the BJP, the Trinamool Congress, the AIADMK, the DMK and the Left members raised the FDI issue in the Lok Sabha, the Congress and the TRS members from the Telangana region wanted immediate introduction of a Bill for Telangana, and the members from Kerala and Tamil Nadu raised slogans for and against construction of a new dam instead of the existing Mullaperiyar reservoir bordering the two States.
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar initially adjourned the House up to noon. Later, when the members continued slogan-shouting, the House was adjourned for the day.
In the Rajya Sabha, the Opposition members took up the FDI issue and the Left members from Kerala raised the Mullaperiyar issue and shouted slogans disrupting question hour. As the din continued, Chairman Hamid Ansari adjourned the House for an hour. Later, when it reassembled, the Opposition protests continued forcing Deputy Chairman K. Rahman Khan to adjourn the House for the day.
