The Adilabad Zilla Parishad general body on Wednesday unanimously resolved to seek drought-hit status for the district in order to mitigate problems of farmers, who are reeling under a dry spell.

The resolution was moved by Adilabad MP G. Nagesh at the very beginning of the general body meeting and all members irrespective of party affiliations, supported it.

The meeting discussed issues related to farmers, primarily the supply of fertilizers and the power problem. Collector M. Jagan Mohan and Joint Director of Agriculture C. Rose Leela said stocks of fertilizers would be positioned in Primary Agriculture Co-operative Societies and the stock position and price of fertilizers would be announced through the media for the benefit of farmers.

The officials also promised to keep black marketing of synthetic manure under check.

They said in order to improve the supply of fertilizers in eastern parts of the district, the issues related to starting a rake point at Mancherial would be resolved soon.

Power supply

MLAs A. Indrakaran Reddy (Nirmal) and Koneru Konappa (Sirpur) raised questions about power supply to the agriculture sector.

They were informed by TS Transco Superintending Engineer B. Ashok that the problem had arisen due to gaps between demand and supply, which was over 2 million units against a daily allotment of 3.8 million units.

The Forest Minister presided over the meeting while ZP chairperson V. Shobha Rani, Khanapur MLA Rekha Naik, Mancherial MLA N. Diwakar Rao, Chennur MLA Nallala Odelu and Mudhole MLA G. Vittal Reddy were among those who attended the meeting.

This was the second meeting of the ZP general body.
