Promising safety on roads for pedestrians, the Krishna District Police have painted new zebra crossings and traffic lines on all the major and minor roads across the Machilipatnam town, as part of a pilot project.
“We have selected Machilipatnam to provide new zebra crossings and traffic lines on roads to monitor the increasing movement of vehicles which is turning out to be a major hurdle for pedestrians,” Krishna District Superintendent of Police G. Vijaya Kumar told The Hindu .
The exercise of painting of zebra crossing and lines had been completed and it had started yielding considerable results as pedestrians were seen moving freely on the roads, he said.
Additional deployment of traffic policemen and erecting of iron barricades at strategic places were among the few other measures initiated by the police to bring down the rate of road accidents in the town.
“Plans are afoot to bring Gudivada town under the zebra crossing and traffic line system as the officials of the Roads and Buildings are engaged in completion of road repair works,” said Mr. Vijaya Kumar.
Mr. Vijaya Kumar opined that zebra crossings could easily guide even illiterates to follow traffic rules and vehicular movements. Earlier, there was no facility of the traffic lines for pedestrians in Machilipatnam town where traffic police needed to regulate the vehicular movements manually. According to police, several business establishments have pledged to donate iron barricades for Machilipatnam as they were being allowed to promote their business advertisements in return.
