The death of a 23-year-old youth, Devarapalli Ravi Teja, created tension in Kankipadu village in Krishna district on Thursday.
A native of Punadipadu village, he suffered injuries in a road accident on April 19 and succumbed to injuries in a private hospital on Wednesday.
However, a relative of Ravi Teja, who accompanied him at the time of the incident, alleged that three youth, in an inebriated condition, misbehaved with her and when Ravi Teja objected to this, they beat him up severely. She initially registered a complaint of accident with the police.
The girl’s family members along with the villagers staged a protest in front of the Kankipadu police station and blocked the Vijayawada-Machilipatnam road for some time, demanding that the police book cases under suitable sections against the accused and pay compensation. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) M. Ravi Prakash, Sub-Collector D. Harichandana and other officers rushed to the spot. Speaking to reporters, the DCP said that based on the girl’s revised statement the police altered sections and the accused were taken into custody. An officer of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police would probe the case, he said.
Ms. Harichandana said the officials would take a decision on providing compensation to the victim’s family, after obtaining the investigation and autopsy reports.
Minister’s assurance
Meanwhile, Secondary Education Minister Kolusu Partharasathy visited Government General Hospital and consoled the family members. He assured them of action against the accused and promised to do justice to the bereaved family.
