Work on 4,000 MW NTPC thermal project gains pace

October 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - HYDERABAD:

The work on the 4,000 MW dedicated power project for Telangana being set up by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at Ramagundam in Karimnagar district has gained momentum with tying up of 4.73 TMC ft water per annum from Sripada Yellampally project.

The national power giant has already commenced work on the 2 x 800 MW first-stage of the project by calling tenders for supply of material.

It has already secured environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for the entire project. The project is coming up in the land bank already available with the NTPC at Ramagundam, where it already has a 2,600 MW inter-State generating station (ISGS).

The Irrigation Department of Telangana on Friday issued orders allocating 2.73 TMC ft of water per annum from Sripada Yellampally project for the 3 x 800 MW second-stage of the thermal power project.

Principal Secretary (Irrigation) S.K. Joshi stated in the orders that the power project could utilise the water subject to payment of charges with usual terms and conditions.

The power project is envisaged to make dedicated supply of energy to Telangana, as promised in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act (APRA).

The State Government has sanctioned supply of 60 cusecs (2 TMC ft) of water throughout the year from Sripada Yellampally project to the 2 x 800 MW stage-one of the project in March this year.

Another request was made by NTPC to the State Government in August this year to allocate an additional 90 cusecs (2.73 TMC ft) of water from Yellampally for the 3 x 800 MW second-stage of the proposed power project.

Allocation sought

The Regional Executive Director (South) of NTPC here has sought allocation of the water for getting some mandatory clearances.

Meanwhile, the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), which is executing the 4,000 MW thermal power plant for Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TS-Genco), has also called tenders for supply of material for the project. The land levelling work at the project site in Dameracherla mandal in Nalgonda district is already in progress.
