Bid to rape schoolgirl at Kalicherla village
In a gruesome incident, a gang of four persons attacked a young man and woman enjoying a picnic at the Kaigal waterfalls, a major tourist spot in the district near Palamaner about 120 km from here on Thursday. The gang fled after allegedly raping the 23-year-old woman.
Information reaching here said the gang reportedly pounced on the pair, said to be from Bangarpet in the bordering Karnataka. After attacking the boy named Muniraju (27) with a knife, they assaulted even the woman when she tried to come to his rescue. The gang then dragged her into the nearby bushes and allegedly gang-raped her before leaving the two in pools of blood.
The incident came to light when some passers-by saw the two struggling for life and alerted the police who rushed them to the PES Hospital at Kuppam where the condition of Muniraju was critical.
According to Palamaner (Rural) Circle Inspector, V. Chandrasekhar, three special teams were pressed into service to track down the culprits. In another incident, a bunch of four masked assailants reportedly made an abortive bid either to gang-rape or kidnap a Class VIII student when she was at the toilet of her Z.P. High School at Kalicherla village in the Peddamandyam mandal, 150 km from here.
The gang escaped on motorcycles when the girl reportedly bit their hands and raised an alarm.
