A 23-year-old housewife, Lakshmi, was allegedly subjected to physical assault by her husband and in-laws, resulting in her suffering an abortion. Lakshmi was in her fourth month of pregnancy. Incidentally, she suffered abortion while being taken to Chittoor by her parents, Achari and Salamma, on January 26. She was rushed to the Government General Hospital in Chittoor.

Lakshmi, diploma-holder in computer science, was married to Suresh of Papampeta in Anantapur in May 2013. The couple has a 10-month old son.

According to the hospital staff, the woman suffered internal injuries.

Lakshmi alleged that she was constantly harassed by her husband and in-laws during the last eight months.

“When my son was two-months old, they forced me to beg in Anantapur town, stating that they would harm my child. They would spend the money I brought home on shopping and movies. Besides, my brother-in-law Sudhakar used to make sexual advances towards me,” Lakshmi charged.

“Many a time, my in-laws sent me to my parents to fetch dowry. On January 24, Sudhakar again made sexual advances towards me. When I resisted, he kicked me in the stomach. While travelling to Chittoor with my parents, I suffered an abortion,” she said.

The woman alleged that on January 1, her in-laws and husband had forced her to hang herself threatening to kill her son if she did not do so.

“However, I managed to wriggle out of the scene, thanks to the commotion outside the house,” Lakshmi said. The Mahila police in Chittoor have registered a case and are investigating.
