In a tragic incident near Kuppam railway station on Saturday evening, a mother and her daughter were hit by two trains and killed.

Halmath (38) and Tarana (11) were crossing the four-line railway tracks close to the station to go to their village D.K. Palle nearby, after purchasing vegetables at the Kuppam market.

They were caught on the edge of a drain between two tracks as the Duronto Super-fast Express going towards Bengaluru and a goods train going towards Chennai crossed each other.

As the duo could not gain a foothold on the drain edge in the narrow space between the tracks due to heavy vibration and gushing wind, they were hit by the sides of compartments of both trains. The body of the mother was found close to a track, her daughter’s was found in the drain.

The Railway police at Kuppam sent the bodies to area hospital for autopsy and registered a case.

A pall of gloom descended on D.K. Palle village as the duo had left for Kuppam to procure vegetables and provisions to prepare Iftar for the evening.
