A quarrel between a young couple on preparing chicken curry and an outing led to suicide attempt in the city on Sunday. They were, however, saved by an alert police constable.

A daily wage labourer, Rajareddy married Thirupatamma a few years ago and they were staying in Vambay Colony. On Sunday, the couple planned to have special dishes and watch a movie.

But the situation turned tense when Rajareddy chided his wife for not preparing the curry to his taste. He also shot down the movie proposal. An upset Thirupatamma jumped into Eluru canal near the Alankar Centre.

In a bid to save her, Rajareddy too jumped into the canal which was in spate. Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP) constable Srinivas Rao, who noticed the couple drowning, jumped in and saved them.

“I am on duty at the Dharna Chowk near Alankar Theatre. When the public raised an alarm, I jumped into the canal and saved the couple,” Mr. Srinivas told the media.

Joint Commissioner of Police B.V. Ramana Kumar praised the constable for saving the two lives. Counselling would be given to the couple to bring them out from suicidal tendency, Mr. Ramana Kumar said.
