More than 100 thatched houses belonging to weavers were damaged due to incessant rains at Kaja village in Movva mandal of Krishna District.
The entire weaving operations have come to a standstill in the village as rains have thrown the 150-odd families out of employment for the past three days. Rain water entered the houses in weavers’ colony as it is situated in low-lying area.
Not even a single pucca road was laid in any lane in the colony. “The rainwater is getting accumulated in the loom pits and we are unable to take up any weaving related activity,” Padavala Panduranga Rao told The Hindu .
“Nobody knows when roofs of our houses will collapse as the thatched houses are completely wet. After Phailin Cyclone, we had to make sure every morning that no casualty was reported,” said Kodati Kanakadurga Rao. The village elders and youths are making rounds to the weavers’ families inquiring whether any damage was done. Families in houses whose walls have collapsed have covered their looms with cloth and with plastic covers.
Senior citizens, who are living alone in thatched houses, are staying in neighbours’ houses during night to avoid any mishap. “Several persons have already fallen ill due to deteriorating sanitary conditions in the village,” villagers told The Hindu .
