Water released into Jurala canals

Ayacutadars of Jurala project are upbeat following the release of water to both right and left main canals of the project on Sunday evening for kharif crop raised under the project. The Jurala project started receiving little quantity water from upper area in Karnataka on Saturday night.

The project superintendent Engineer Khagender told The Hindu that over 200 cusecs of water has been released through right main canal while 300 cusecs of water released through left main canal to irrigate 1,07,000 acres during kharif. The release of water to main canals was possible following heavy inflows into Jurala project from upper reaches of the Kishna river.

The S.E said Narayanpur project authorities in Karnataka have lifted18 gates of their project to one meter height and releasing 1.30 lakh cusecs of water down stream. Naryanapur reservoir is receiving same volume of water from Almatti, he said.

Jurala project is receiving 84,450 cusecs of water from upper reaches of Krishna river. The hydel power generation station at Jadcharla has already started generating power from its 6 units. Each unit of the station generates 39 MW of power.

The total installation capacity of generation of power in Jurala Hydel project is 234 MW, over 40,000 cusecs of water being used to generate power through hydel project and the same released into down stream which flows into Srisailam reservoir.

The SE Khagender said the crest gates of Jurala project would be lifted on Monday morning after impounding certain quantity of water in the reservoir.

As against full reservoir level of 318.94 meter, the present level is 315.5. After filling the reservoir level water would be released down stream through crest gates, SE said. “We could release water to canals this year over 25 days in advance as last year we started releasing water to ayacut from August 12, said the SE.

He said the volume of water being released through main canals would be increased gradually.
