Water level in the Godavari at Bhadrachalam hovered around 25 feet on Monday after it witnessed sudden spurt owing to copious rainfall in the upper reaches of the river in Maharashtra on Sunday.
It may be mentioned that the water level in the river rose from 7.4 feet on Saturday evening to 24 feet on Sunday evening within a span of 24 hours.
However, the water level increased by one foot and remained static around 25 feet on Monday evening.
The bathing ghats on the banks of the Godavari at the temple town remained under a sheet of water for the second consecutive day on Monday.
Close watch
Though the water level in the river stood at 25 feet, exactly 18 feet below the first warning level of 43 feet, the irrigation authorities kept a close watch on the inflows in the river at Bhadrachalam.
According to official sources, the water level is likely to increase one or two feet before receding in the next 24 hours.
Road connectivity snapped
Meanwhile, a swollen stream flooded the low-level causeway at Cheekupalli in Wajedu mandal on Monday evening snapping the road connectivity to several remote villages in the mandal.
Surplus water released into sea
The Head-works wing of Irrigation department on Monday evening released 2.24 lakh cusecs of surplus water into the sea. According to official sources, the present water level at Dowleswaram is 8.30 feet and expecting to reach 9 feet tonight.
As the inflows started from last two-days, the colour of water changed into reddish and people of Rajahmundry and surrounding areas reaching Sir Arthur Cotton Bridge at Dowleswaram and other main Ghats to see fresh water.
