Tension prevailed at Gollalakoderu village of Palakoderu mandal in West Godavari district on Sunday morning when a person opened fire in the air with his rifle, following a dispute over ownership of a piece of land in the village.

According to the police, the village sarpanch Suryanarayana Raju allocated three cents of land for the construction of the office of Brahmin Sangham in the village. One Ramakrishnam Raju from the village raised objection to the decision and stated that it was unfair on the part of the sarpanch to allocate the land from Kshatriya-dominated area for the construction of a hall for other caste. The sarpanch, however, did not acknowledge the objection but made arrangements for handing over the site to the representatives of the Brahmin Sangham on Sunday morning.

Ramakrishnam Raju entered the scene with his rifle and opened fire in the air after which people panicked and left the spot. Following a complaint, the police visited the village and arranged security. An inquiry about the whereabouts of the weapon is in progress.
