The public meeting of YSR Congress honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma slated to be held at Kagaznagar town on December 30, in connection with the entry of former Sirpur MLA Koneru Konappa into the party, has been postponed. Though the organisers have given some other reason for it, it is quite evident that they are apprehensive of holding the event just a couple of days after the December 28 all-party meeting on the issue of separate Telangana State, as they are not sure about the outcome of that meeting.
The all important meeting in the National Capital has generated tremendous anxiety, and hope too, among those political leaders and the general public in the region who are considered to be in favour of unified Andhra, if not anti-Telangana.
Leaders and cadres of the Congress, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress (YSRC) expect their parties to put forth a positive response for formation of Telangana State which only can relieve them from the ‘tension’ they are experiencing since the eventful December 2009. Observers say anxiety was the main reason for an unusually large number of people to gather at the recent public meetings of TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu and YSRC honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma. “People had come expecting our leader to come out with a definite stand on the Telangana issue,” says Boath MLA and TDP Adilabad district unit president G. Nagesh as he concurs with the contention.
“We are now hopeful of our party supporting the cause of Telangana irrespective of whatever stand is taken by other parties, including the ruling Congress,” he says. The senior TDP leader, one of the chief organisers of Mr. Naidu’s Vasthunna Meekosam padayatra in the district earlier this month, has had enough time during the nine-day event to impress upon his party president the need for coming out with an unambiguous stand on the issue.
The YSRC rank and file in the district are also hopeful of their party clearly supporting formation of Telangana. “If our party goes against the tide, its growth in the region will be affected badly,” says a YSRC leader in the district, voicing his concern.
