YSRC honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma on Tuesday broke her two-day long fast on the issue of fee reimbursement for college students after issuing an ultimatum to the government.

Accepting a glass of lemon water offered by some engineering college students to mark the end of her fast, she said that her party would intensify the agitation if the government failed to clear the air of uncertainty over the fate of the fee reimbursement scheme within a week.

Ms. Vijayamma sought legal status for the scheme so as to ensure its continuation regardless of the change of governments in the State.

She stated that she would not rest until a categorical statement came from the government to the effect that the latter would bear the fee in full in the form of reimbursement and payment of old dues to the students.

She expressed anguish over the alleged laxity on the part of the government towards the future of students. “Even as the neighbouring States have already kick-started the counselling process for admission into professional courses, there are no such signs in our State even in the third week of August.

With this, the future of a large number of students is hanging in the balance,” she said.
