B. Vidyasagar was on Sunday arrested in the suspicious death of doctor K. Surya Kumari (25), whose body was found in a canal in Krishna district on Saturday.

The doctor went missing from her house in Machavaram on August 1 and her mother, Mariyamma, lodged a complaint with the police. The body was found at Komatikunta Lakulu and her two-wheeler was traced near the Ryves canal in the city.

The bereaved family members alleged that Vidyasagar, who made friends with Surya Kumari, had gone back on his promise of marrying her, which led to her death. However, Vidyasagar’s family members said he had been arrested without any reason.

Surya Kumari was working as doctor in a Primary Health Centre in Vissannapet mandal, while Vidyasagar is in jewellery business.

Vidyasagar’s name came to the fore following the suspicion of his wife, Soumya, who said her husband and Surya Kumari might have had an affair and the issue was discussed in the family earlier.

In a message sent to Vidyasagar’s mobile phone before she went missing, the doctor said: “You cheated me by rejecting to marry me.” But Vidyasagar denied any affair with Surya Kumari. The police are trying to ascertain the facts.

“Surya Kumari might have died three days ago and the body was in a highly decomposed condition,” said Police Commissioner D. Gautam Sawang. The police handed over the body to her family after post-mortem on Sunday.

The Machavaram police registered a case against Vidyasagar under Sections 420 IPC (Cheating), 417 (Punishment for Cheating) and 306 IPC (Abetment of suicide). He was produced before the magistrate and was remanded to judicial custody.
