The Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has instructed Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to use the water available in the reservoirs carefully till August.
The three-member committee of the KRMB met in Hyderabad under the chairmanship of its Member-Secretary E. Paramesan on Wednesday.
Engineer-in-Chief of Andhra Pradesh M. Venkateswara Rao and his Telangana counterpart Muralidhar attended the meeting.
At the end of the meeting, it was decided that Andhra Pradesh could draw 60 tmcft from Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar this year. Similarly, Telangana could draw 50 tmcft for irrigation and drinking water purposes.
As a prelude to this meeting, Mr. Paramesan, on Tuesday, wrote a letter to both the States informing them that only 133.75 tmcft was currently available in both Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar reservoirs.
According to the ratio of 66% for A.P. and 34% for Telangana agreed earlier, Andhra Pradesh could draw up to a maximum of 73.42 tmcft and Telangana 60.33 tmcft.
Mr. Paramesan asked the two States to utilise the available water judiciously.
In his letter, Mr. Paramesan said that A.P. was utilising its share faster than Telangana. The Engineers-in-Chief agreed that any differences could be adjusted in the “monthly allotments.”
The States were told that future allotments would be made on the basis of the average flows in the river during the past three years.
