Under-19 women cricket tourney starts today

BCCI is hosting the zonal league tournament

March 20, 2013 02:23 pm | Updated 02:23 pm IST - GUNTUR:

After a lull, cricketing action unfolds at the Andhra Cricket Association Women’s Cricket Academy on JKC College grounds in Guntur on Wednesday. The BCCI Under-19 Women Zonal League Tournament is being played simultaneously at JKC College grounds and at ACA Stadium at Mangalagiri during March 20-March 26.

The recent reverses suffered by the Indian women’s cricket team in the World Cup seemed to have prompted BCCI to look seriously look at tapping the talented players in the Under-19 age group. After a gap of six years, the BCCI is hosting the zonal league tournament. Sources in the ACA said that BCCI is seriously toying with an idea of introducing a world cup for U-19 players on the sidelines of men’s cricket.

Vice President of ACA and Chairman of Women’s Cricket Academy J. Narendranath said at a media conference on Tuesday that five teams are taking part in the tournament. The performances of players in the league matches played among North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone and Central Zone are key to selection in the U-19 Women National team.

The South Zone team is led by Nidhi Torvi and has five players from Andhra. Promising all rounder S. Meghana, R. Kalpana, G. Chandralekha, V. Snehadeepthi and Ch. Jhansi Lakshmi have been selected to represent the south zone.
