: The State government has decided to open two more branches of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT), the institution catering to the needs of predominantly rural youth, from the current academic year. The admission process for the two RGUKT institutions, to be opened at Ongole in Prakasam district and Srikakulam in Srikakulam district, commenced on Thursday. The last date for submitting applications is July 29 and the merit list would be hosted online on July 31.

Counselling for admission into the institutions will be held on August 8 and 9 for special category applicants and August 10 and 11 in respect of general students. Students who qualified in their SSC examination and completing 18 years by December 31 this year will be eligible to apply for the course which would be a six-year integrated course. The institutions would offer courses in six engineering streams – Chemical, Civil, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communications, Material Science and Metallurgical and Mechanical.

Human Resource Development Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, who made the announcement, said admission to the two new centres would be made on the basis of Article 371-D earmarking 85 per cent seats to local and the remaining 15 per cent in the open category. The commencement of the admission process comes in the light of the decision taken by the State Cabinet at its recent meeting. The State currently had two campuses of the RGUKT, one at Idupulapaya in Kadapa district and the other at Nuzvid in Krishna district. Classes for the students enrolling into the courses would commence from August 16 and students would have to attend the classes at Nuzvid and Idupulapaya till basic infrastructure was put in place in the two new campuses.

Anantapur centre planned

The government, he said, had initiated the process for setting up one more centre of the RGUKT at Anantapur and the admissions for the institution would commence from the next academic year. On the academic calendar of the Idupulapaya and Nuzvid centres, he said admission to 600 out of the 770 seats was completed in Idupulapaya while 531 seats out of the 570 were filled in Nuzvid centre.
