Roof of RK 7 underground Singareni mine collapses
Two coal miners were killed and another injured owing to collapse of the roof of the RK 7 underground mine in Srirampur area of the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) in Adilabad district on Saturday. The accident which sparked off protests from miners took place at about 6 am during the third shift.
The victims were identified as Rapaka Kotaiah (56), a coal cutter and Nerella Satish Goud (33), a trainee ‘badli’ filler while the injured person was Muthineni Ramulu who is undergoing treatment at Mancherial Area Hospital. The bodies were handed over to the relatives after a post mortem..Rs. 25 lakh ex gratia sought
Agitating trade union activists demanded Rs. 25 lakh as compensation and ex gratia for each of the miners who were killed and jobs for their kin. SCCL Srirampur area General Manager T. Nageswara Rao however, promised compensation as per the guidelines of the company.
Around 100 young trainee coal miners of the same underground mine also staged a sit in demanding jobs in the Singareni Collieries commensurate with their educational qualification. The youth, who are kin of miners dead in accidents, were recently appointed on compassionate ground by the SCCL.
Notwithstanding higher educational qualifications, the Singareni Collieries had appointed them in the position of miners.
The protesters alleged that the SCCL had promised them jobs suiting their qualifications.
