Unidentified offenders decamped with gold ornaments weighing two kg worth about ₹60 lakh and ₹2 lakh cash from a parked car here on Sunday.

A jeweller from Kovur, near Nellore, Rahul Jain, after supplying gold ornaments en route to customers in Kandukur and Tangutur, parked his car before a restaurant.

Poor security

He was shocked to find the ornaments kept in two bags missing when he came back, said Ongole Deputy Superintendent of Police B.Srinivasa Rao.

Registering a case, I Town police began a probe with the available CCTV footage. The theft brings to light the fact that many traders in the yellow metal carry it with poor security. While corporate jewellery stores make purchases of gold and gold ornaments through online cash transfers, many smaller players buy gold with unaccounted money and sell ornaments without bills, according to sources in the trade.

Most of such transactions done on cash payment are transported in person by cars, buses and even trains, the sources said. In case of urgent requirement, couriers are used to carry cash by bus or train.
