Two nominations were filed on the first day of submission of nominations for the Kakinada Municipal Corporation elections to be held on August 29.

The distribution of nomination forms and the receipt of filled-in forms commenced at 10.30 a.m. and 170 aspirants obtained the forms on the first day.

After a gap of seven years, the Election Commission issued a notification to conduct elections to 48 of the 50 divisions. Election to two divisions, 42 and 48, could not be held owing to legal issues.

Hectic political activity

Even as the election process commenced, divisional-level leaders of various political parties are said to be on the verge of shifting their loyalties.

From the ruling Telugu Desam Party and the Congress, local leaders are reportedly joining the Opposition YSR Congress Party in good numbers. The city offices of the political parties are bustling with activity with ticket aspirants making a beeline with their supporters. State-level leaders are visiting the city offices and holding discussions with local leaders.

Arrangements

On the other hand, officials are busy making arrangements for the elections. After identifying the polling stations and the staff to conduct the poll process, scheduling of training programmes for the presiding officers is in progress.
