TV industry wants facilities in Telangana

Compared to film industry, TV industry never received its due recognition, they say

With the ‘Appointed Date’ approaching, the television fraternity has decided to close ranks and approach Telangana Chief Minister-elect K. Chandrasekhara Rao for support to strengthen the industry here.

Representatives from all the crafts of TV have formed a federation and plan to meet Mr. Rao with request for a series of steps to help the industry.

Unlike Telugu film industry which shifted to the city from Chennai, Telugu TV was born in Hyderabad and has been thriving here. “Successive governments helped the film industry come, stabilise and strengthen here in the city, but no such support was ever offered to the television which was born here,” says Vijay Yadav, president of Telugu TV Artists Association.

From locations to absence of studio spaces to police harassment, the TV fraternity has listed out issues for the government to act. “The A.P State Film TV and Theatre Development Corporation catered primarily to the film industry and did little for television. We want the new government to set up a separate corporation for us,” says Mr.Yadav.

It is estimated that more than 10,000 persons depend on TV industry and involved in 24 crafts from lighting, camera to make-up, production assistants and actors. TV seniors here points out the need for the government to identify and promote good shooting locations in surrounding districts of Warangal, Nizamabad and Medak so that the productions do not move to A.P. President of Telugu TV Producers’ Association Prasada Rao cites the problems faced by serial-makers because of limited shooting floors.

“Annapurna and Rama Naidu studios are meant for film making and are not affordable for TV serials or shows put together at small budgets,” he claims.

Affordable floors which could be used for location shots such as village street, police station and so on are not available forcing the production teams to shoot live on streets only to face the police wrath, he avers. “A single window permission facility to get permissions for shooting outdoors from a local police station after paying a small fee is desirable,” says Yata Satyanarayana, president of Telugu TV Directors’ Association.

Another major request is about housing. “When the film industry was given Film Nagar and Chitrapuri, nothing was given to TV. We will urge the new government for a TV Nagar,” adds Mr.Vijay Yadav.
