The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) will give a notice of no confidence against the Congress government in the budget session of the Assembly beginning Wednesday for its failures to solve the burning issues faced by people and not conceding the demand for statehood to Telangana.
The decision to serve the notice was announced by TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao after a meeting of the legislature party on Monday evening. He claimed the support of the three-member BJP and independent MLA of Nagarkurnool, Nagam Janardhan Reddy, at the press conference after the meeting. The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) which has seven MLAs, CPI (four) and CPI (M) and Lok Satta (one each) have sought time to make up their mind, he said.
To write to TD, YSRC
The TRS has 17 MLAs and enjoys the support of at least three others who were not elected on its symbol in the 294 member Assembly. They are S. Satyanarayana, an independent, K. Harishwar Reddy of the TDP who joined TRS subsequently, besides, S. Venugopalachary, who has been suspended by the TDP.
KCR said his party will write to the TDP and YSR Congress seeking their support for the no confidence motion, adding that the move will expose the true colours of all parties. Whether they stood for separate Telangana or opposed the demand would be known by the move.
Besides giving the notice of no confidence, the TRS will not allow the functioning of Assembly unless a resolution on statehood for Telangana was moved. He and his colleague, Vijayashanti, will also raise the demand in Parliament, he said.
Mr. Rao also said his party will obstruct the Governor’s address to the join session of the Legislature on the opening day. He criticised the State government for failure to address the problems of people, particularly on the power front. The government made no attempt to keep Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s promise to purchase power from other surplus States.
Earlier, a meeting of the legislature party adopted resolutions to give the notice of no confidence against the government, make the ‘Sadak bandh’ programme on March 21 a success and demand scrapping of value added tax on textiles.
The Congress party reacted cautiously to the TRS announcement that it would move a no-confidence motion. Deputy Chief Minister C. Damodar Rajanarsimha, while welcoming the TRS announcement, said the Congress was ready to prove its strength on the floor of the House. The TRS chief only wants elections all the time, he told reporters here.
Revenue Minister N. Raghuveera Reddy went a step further stating that no-trust motion against the government would boomerang on the TRS.
Though Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and the PCC chief Botcha Satyanarayana have dared the opposition parties to move the no-trust motion, a section of the party leaders indeed expressed fears about the rebel legislators’ mood.
At least 10 MLAs have openly supported the YSRC and chances of these legislators defying the party Whip cannot be ruled out.
The option left for the Congress, according to some seniors, is that the Speaker should accept the resignation letters tendered by the four rebel MLAs to send a strong signal to others.
