The ancient hillock formation draws a large number of people

December 22, 2014 10:34 pm | Updated 10:34 pm IST - CHITTOOR:

The tourism officials in Chittoor district have selected one of the popular tourism spots, Puligundu, a geological marvel, to host the December 31 revelry.

Known as the Tiger Rocks during the British Raj, this rare dual rock hillock formation at a height of over 1,000 feet is all set to attract hundreds of nature lovers and revellers on the New Year-eve. It is for the first time that the tourism officials are arranging the New Year-eve bash at the foot of the hillock, located in Penumuru mandal, 30 km from here.

The ancient hillock formation during festive occasions attracts huge number of local people from all over district, and from the neighbouring Tamil Nadu. According to a local legend, Lord Siva killed a demon when he started devouring the people in the form of a man-eating tiger. After annihilating the tiger, Siva had adorned the skin on his waist. To thank the Lord, a temple atop the hillock was built to him.

Tourism Manager (Puligundu unit) P.S. Mamatha told The Hindu that after the launch of the tourism project at Puligundu, there had been a steady increase of tourists since March this year. “As part of giving a boost to the sector, we chose the place to host the New Year-eve jubilation at our resort at the foot of the hillock. We are making arrangements to offer mouth-watering dishes to the New Year rush here at highly affordable tariffs. Our prime objective is not commercial, but to give the much required boost to tourism sector. Puligundu offers the best ambience for adventure sports,” she said.

The celebrations will start from 7 p.m. till midnight of December 31, presenting orchestra, cultural programmes and magic shows, and special events for children. The official said that liquor is strictly prohibited at the venue.
