Three persons lose sight after cataract surgery

July 09, 2014 11:47 pm | Updated July 29, 2016 01:59 pm IST - ANANTAPUR:

At least three persons from the district lost sight in one eye due to the alleged negligence of the authorities at the Government General Hospital in Anantapur. Five persons were reportedly operated upon on June 23 for cataract at the Anantapur GGH by a team of two doctors. However, the very next day all of them complained of pain and irritation and it was found that the eye they were operated upon for cataract was infected.

After a thorough investigation, Superintendent K.S.S. Venkateswara Rao said, the operation theatre was found to be unhygienic. “Ever since the theatre has been closed and no surgeries performed. The hospital was fumigated and re-fumigated to eliminate all forms of infection. We have even taken three samples from the theatre and the results for presence of harmful bacteria have been negative,” he said.

He said all the five patients were immediately refereed to the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital under the ‘Arogyasri’ scheme.
