The trio had purchased the drug from a friend in Hyderabad for Rs.10,000

The Karimnagar Two Town police on Thursday arrested three youths in the age group of 20 years and recovered two grams of cocaine from their possession which they allegedly procured from Hyderabad for consumption.

Karimnagar Two Town Circle Inspector Vijay Kumar told The Hindu that during regular vehicle checking, the police found three youngsters -- Deekshith, Naveen and Pranay -- all studying degree second year in a reputed private degree college in Karimnagar, moving under suspicious circumstances at Ramnagar locality in the town. When the police intercepted their vehicles and conducted a check, they found two grams of cocaine in their possession.

During interrogation, the students told the police that they had bought the cocaine from a friend in Hyderabad for Rs.10,000. The three said that they had also procured the drug on an earlier occasion for consumption. A case was registered against the three under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

People shocked

The people of Karimnagar expressed shock and concern over the drug culture creeping into the district headquarters. “Karimnagar is fast progressing after Hyderabad. It will become a big menace if drug culture is not controlled at an early stage and the culprits go unpunished,” majority of the residents opined.

“It is very unfortunate that the drug culture has entered Karimnagar. It is time to gear up and take necessary steps to check the spread of drugs. Parents should also observe the behaviour of students. Just sending their wards to college is not enough. Parents should also spend some time with them and frequently inquire about their education and career plans etc,” opined N. Srinivas, president, Lok Satta voluntary organisation.

D. Raghuraman, a physician, said, “Drug addicts lose interest in career and education and become violent if they do not get their dose. They will become a menace to the society and their family.” IMA district secretary and psychologist Praveen Kumar said youth consume drugs for euphoric effect and become intolerant when they don’t get the drug. He said parents should keep a close watch on the behaviour of their children and also their friends.
