Tension prevailed in Angaluru village of Devipatnam mandal in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday as the Revenue Department and Police tried to evacuate villagers.

The village has been notified as one of the many villages that will submerge on completion of Polavaram major irrigation project. Nine tribal youth made a self- immolation bid and a woman suffered heart stroke while making heated arguments with police.

Congress MLC T. Ratnabai led the tribals, but the police took nine tribal into custody and shifted them to Seethanagaram and Devipatnam hospitals, whereas the woman who complained of chest pain was taken to Devipatnam hospital. Doctors stated that the woman was out of danger.

Meanwhile, Rampachodavaram RDO G.V. Satyavathi rushed to Anguluru, while ITDA Project Officer KVN Chakradhara Babu held high-level meeting with the police and revenue officials to review the situation. He also spoke to District Collector H. Arun Kumar.

It has to be recalled that government had paid compensation under old Relief and Rehabilitation package to Angaluru, Devipatnam and other tribal and non-tribal as part of Polavaram submergence plan. But, tribal are demanding compensation as per 2014 R & R package and non-tribal are demanding land to land and increase the compensation amount, for which government is not ready.
