The image of Lord Venkateswara will soon appear on the dial of the watches made by Switzerland-based Centurion watch company.
Company representatives met Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Executive Officer L.V. Subrahmanyam on Wednesday and sought his permission to use the image of the Lord on the watch dial.
The company will make 333 diamond-studded watches, each worth several crores of rupees, to be auctioned in London.
It has come forward to donate a percentage of its profit to the TTD-run Balaji Institute of Surgery and Relief and Rehabilitation of the Disabled (BIRRD) Trust.

I would look it from a positive point of view. The Centurion requested TTD permission which is good. I believe TTD wouldn't simply approve something without thiking or brainstorning from the peers. They are far more experienced and concerned about TTD than many. The money is going for a good cause then why to stop it. Maanava seva = Madhava seva.
And for that matter, how many people in EAST have god/goddess rings/chains/dollers and out of those how many are removing those before using the rest room? Talking about the west knowing the importance of Lord, does our kids know importance of what we do but we let them do expecting 'eventually they will also understand' and for that we have to give an oppertunity, they should be starting at some point. This step is better compared to people printing the pictures on some cloths and facing protest.
I am sad that TTD has set a price upon Lord Venkateswara. It's decision to commercialize Lord Venkateswara should be condemned. In the west, the reverance around Lord Venkateswara would be lost when worn by those for whom Lord Venkateswara means nothing. It would be uncommon that such a person may even wear the watch when visiting the bathroom / toilet.
TTD has already made crores and crores of money. There's simply no dearth of income to TTD. Does it make sense to take this step now?
In general, pictures and photos of any God, be it Rama, Allah, Jesus, etc, should not be printed on material that are likely to be discarded in the waste bin, or streets. Sadly we see such pictures on bags and papers.
