Suspected Maoist held

A suspected Maoist, who allegedly burnt a camp shed of the Forest Department inside the Silent Valley National Park in January along with a few others, was arrested by the Agali police on Friday. The arrested was identified as Sundaran alias Unnikrishnan, 49, a native of Kumaramputhur, near Mannarkkad. The police said he was taken into custody on Thursday evening and his arrest was recorded on Friday afternoon. He would be produced at a Mannarkkad court on Saturday.

The police said Sundaran was taken into custody from Agali following a tip-off. A farm worker, he had been residing at Agali for long.

Officials said he allegedly led a team of Maoists that set the shed near the Anavayi Upper tribal hamlet on fire. The police had recovered Maoist pamphlets and posters from the spot. Maoists had claimed responsibility for the incident.
