The suicide of a first year CEC student of the Kakatiya Junior College here, at his residence on the APSP 7th Battalion campus at Dichpally, triggered widespread protests by students, leading to attacks on the college building and college buses on Thursday.
The student, Pavan Kalyan, son of Devaiah, a cook of the APSP 7th battalion, studying in the Kakatiya Junior College, hung himself from the ceiling fan at his residence with his mother’s sari around 3 p.m. on Thursday.
He reportedly informed his parents over the phone that he was hurt by the admonition of college teachers and the management for not appearing for the quarterly exams and for his absence from college for over 20 days.
It is said that based on the complaint lodged by his parents, the Dichpally Sub-Inspector of Police, Naresh registered the case against the college management. However, the Deputy SP, S. Anilkumar, told The Hindu that the case was not booked as the police had not received a complaint from his parents.
Students under the banner of various unions staged a dharna before the mortuary at the district headquarters hospital where the body of Pavan Kalyan was brought in for post-mortem.
The student union leaders accused the college management of harassing students resulting in the suicide by Pavan Kalyan and demanded action against it.
The college principal, Ch. Rajinikanth, said that the student was not admonished but just asked as to why he was absent from college for almost a month.
He was neither beaten up nor harassed and he left the college after telling the teachers that he would bring his father to talk to them, he added.
