An engineering student, Nadikuditi Lokesh Varma (20), committed suicide allegedly after he lost in cricket betting in Kalidindi mandal of Krishna district.

Lokesh, a native of Mattagunta village in the district, was pursuing second year engineering in Siddhartha Engineering College, Vijayawada. He reportedly made a bet with his friend, Kadali Prasad, during the India-Bangladesh cricket match in the ongoing Champions Trophy by promising to hand over a piece of his land besides money.

After he lost the bet, Prasad reportedly pressured Lokesh to fulfil his promise. Unable to bear pressure, the latter allegedly consumed poison on Friday. He was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment.

Prasad leased some fish ponds on Krishna-West Godavari district borders, and Varma’s father, Umamaheshwara Rao is an agriculture labourer. The Kalidindi police who are investigating the case are trying to collect the call data recordings of the victim and his friend.

“We registered a case and launched a hunt to nab Prasad. A case of suspicious death has been registered,,” Kaikalur Circle Inspector V. Ravi Kumar said.
