The movement for a public sector sea port project at Ramayapatnam picked up pace with leaders, cutting across party lines, coming together for waging a relentless struggle for the early grounding of the Central project in Prakasam district.
In a positive development, leaders from neighbouring Nellore district lent their support for a series of protests planned to exert pressure on the State government to select Ramayapatnam as the alternative site for the second major public sector port in the State in the wake of NITI Ayog reportedly concluding that Dugarajapatnam, the proposed site was ‘economically unviable and technically infeasible'.
PDDF president Ch. Ranga Rao said a mass awareness programme would be held till the first week of June in 30 mandals. This would be followed by a fortnight-long relay fast from the second week of June, added CPI Prakasam district secretary K. Aruna.
Senior TDP leader Karanam Balaram Krishnamurthy, who led many struggles in the past for the cause, promised to impress upon Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu during the party conclave Mahanadu at Visakhapatnam to act fast in this regard.
Extending YSRC's support, MPs Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy and Y.V.Subba Reddy said the State government should respond quickly by suggesting to the Centre Ramayapatnam as an alternative site for the second major port project on the east coast.
